How about a tour through Boston's Middle Eastern past? Thanks to
CAC for the tweet!
What's left is the Syrian grocery store and the building that used to be the Sahara restaurant. But not so long ago there was a thriving Syrian and Lebanese community in the South End. Join Richard Shibley as he shares his personal memories of growing up in this Arab American enclave. Expect to learn about restaurants, bookie joints, churches and bakeries. Our meeting point is the fountain in Blackstone Park at 6 pm on Monday August 15th.
Richard is the grandson of Lebanese immigrants. His father Fred was the notorious editor and owner of the weekly Mid-Town Journal published here between 1938 and 1966.
United South End Settlement (USES) walks are free and open to all and proceed at a pace that anyone can handle. There is an optional dinner afterwards at the Red Fez with Richard and well behaved leashed dogs are invited to join us for both the walk and outdoor dining. We limit attendance to 20 people so please RSVP to Molly Brown at mbrown@uses.org. The walk will be rescheduled in case of rain and you will be notified by email. We maintain a wait list so if you cannot attend, please let Molly know. [source..]
